Missed court date, Minneapolis woman faces deportation

Hoa Nguyen, 29, came to America from Vietnam on a student visa 10 years ago. She got married to Dan Hanson, an Illinois-born U.S.-citizen, and made a life in Minneapolis. But she failed to file for a green card and missed an immigration hearing in August. Nguyen was placed in Sherburne County jail. An immigration judge denied her motion to re-open her case, stating that her arguments did not constitute the "exceptional circumstances" needed to grant the motion. Nguyen now faces deportation within the next two weeks.

  1. Oh that is so sad :( I know first-hand that American is pretty strict on immigrants. It's a very strategic and arduous process imposed by the government. My sister married a Peruvian and they had to prove that their relationship was a legitimate one for him to be granted a visa. It took my sister ten months to compile a binder full of pictures, videos, plane tickets and other evidence of their six-year dating relationship and year long engagement. He was finally allowed to come into the US and then they spent all their wedding money on his green card! It's a crazy process, it makes me realize why there are so many illegal immigrants. The process is so complicated.
